A beautiful Mt. Baker (the true name is Koma Kulshan) adventure engagement session.
I met Christina last year when we both worked together as kayak instructors at the Community Boating Center in Bellingham. She’s legitimately one of the most badass ladies I know, so when I found out she was engaged….I was really hoping we’d end up talking. I didn’t want to put any pressure on her to book with me, so waited for her to bring it up. Of course, she was waiting for me to bring it up! Finally, the conversation was had and we were BOTH so stoked to be working with one another in a creative capacity. An adventure engagement session hiking around Mt. Baker was definitely in order for her and her partner, Diego. While their wedding will be this winter at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, these two are a fan of the outdoor adventures. While eloping to the mountains didn’t quite fit their vision for including their family, an adventure engagement session was the perfect compromise.
We headed up from Bellingham to Mt. Baker in the evening and had a blast talking and listening to music a long the way. While we weren’t sure about the weather due to some overcast clouds, I was wondering if we might get an inversion layer of fog. Based on where Artist’s Point is, I thought we might actually be above the cloud layers.
We got up there just in time to catch the last of the beautiful golden hour and the final view of Mt. Baker that we would get for the evening due to the fog that rolled in HARD while up there. Soon the views were covered, but we would get glimpses every once in awhile, making the dramatically ridge lines even more dramatic as they played hide and seek with us.
I loved how epic they looked with the billowing fog and shadowed mountain lines in the background.
We popped some champagne (aggressively, you might notice) and sat back to enjoy the views (and lack there of).
On the way down, I thought it would be fun to play with the dramatic light of the headlights in the fog…and absolutely MAGIC was created while these two practiced their dancing skills in the headlights and fog on the foothills of Koma Kulshan.
I absolutely love Artist’s Point area for adventure engagement sessions and elopements. There are so many beautiful trails to explore, depending on the level of intensity that people want for a session. I’ve also had fun bringing families and even doing outdoor boudoir empowerment sessions out here. One other things I’d like to note is the naming on the mountain. While I referred to Koma Kulshan as Mount Baker several times through out this blog, most of that was just for SEO purposes. The true name IS Koma Kulshan, as Mt. Baker was the white colonizer name that is more commonly known. More and more there are movements to reclaim the original names for significant areas like Kulshan, and I’m all on board with showing respect to those who’s land I am on. Another great app for knowing names and who’s land you’re on is an app called Native Land. It shows you a map and the intersections of all the nations and people groups that existed in that space prior to recent history of colonization. The more you know!
